Description
Local author, Mary Bell Meyer, will be the guest speaker at the Friends of the Douglas County Library’s annual meeting, Saturday, January 25, 11 a.m., in the Grandview Dining Room at the Douglas County Community and Senior Center. The event is free and open to the public. The event will begin with a short business meeting to elect the 2025 Friends of the Douglas County Library officers and board members.
Mary Bell Meyer is the author of At Last, published in 2024. The book is set in the fictional town of Perryton, Ohio, with a community newspaper editor, a library, and the Mackinac Island resort where the two main characters in the book meet 40 years before reconnecting. The book received a Regal Summit Book Award in 2024 for best novella. Her second book, Where We Love, published this month, begins with a similar setting but also takes place in Minden, Carson City, and various California locales. Copies of At Last will be available for purchase and signing for $15 – cash or check only.
Mary’s talk will highlight the popularity and benefits of book discussion groups, and how the Douglas County Public Library supports local book groups with a growing collection of “Book Group in a Bag” kits with 10 copies of a book that can be checked out at the Minden or Zephyr Cove Library. Currently, there are 97 titles, with more to come in 2025 with funding provided from the 2024 Library Gala. The collection was initiated in 2013 when Mary, assisted by a library staff member, started the library’s first-ever book discussion group – the 2nd Wednesday Book Group, which meets at the Minden Library at 5 pm the 2nd Wednesday of every month. Mary retired as leader of the group and, later, started another book group that meets monthly at the Carson Valley United Methodist Church in Gardnerville.
