Description
Lahontan Audubon Society and The Nature Conservancy in Nevada will host a 4-week series to highlight the wildlife and habitat found in the Carson Valley. These NV bird ID and coyote classes are an excellent opportunity for new birders and wildlife viewers to learn from some of the area’s experts! This 4-week “Feathers and Furs of Carson Valley” series with be Thursday evenings Nov. 7, 14, & Dec. 5 from 6-8pm, at the River Fork Ranch Preserve.
The Thursday evening “Feathers and Furs of Carson Valley” series of will include:
Nov. 7 - Neighborhood Birds
Nov. 14 – Wetland Birds
Nov. 21 – Flycatchers and Coyotes in Nevada
Dec. 5 – Raptors, Owls, Ravens, and Jays

Nov. 7, 2019: Alan Gubanich
Alan Gubanich earned a Masters and PhD in Biological Sciences from the University of Arizona in Tucson, where he fell in love with the West and it’s birds. In 1970 he started teaching General Biology at the University in Reno. He then taught the Ornithology and Field Ornithology class for ~15 years. Alan was the Vice-President of LAS for 15 years. Every year he and his wife escape to warmer climes by organizing birding trips with friends to places like Central and South America.
Nov. 14, 2019: Mike Goddard
Mike Goddard knows a lot about birds of lakes and Marshes! He worked 29 years with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as a Wildlife Refuge Manager after earning a B.S. Degree in Wildlife and Fisheries from New Mexico State University in 1985. He managed bighorn sheep in New Mexico, waterfowl in Oklahoma, Whooping Cranes in Texas, Masked Bobwhite Quail and Bighorn sheep in Arizona, and shorebirds and waterfowl in Nevada. He was the manager at Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge in Fallon, Nevada for 9 years prior to retiring in 2012.
Nov. 21, 2019: Don Molde
Don Molde is a 50-year Nevada resident, retired physician, long-time wildlife advocate. Molde is a former board member of Defenders of Wildlife, current board member of Mountain Lion Foundation, co-founder of Nevada Wildlife Alliance. He’s been active in Nevada wildlife issues since 1975.
Dec. 5, 2019 Rob Lowry
Jiim Woods
Rob Lowry makes frequent birding trips around Nevada and currently leads the state with over 300+ bird species observed this year! Lowry also hosts the Audubon Christmas Bird Count in Carson City.
Jim Woods is the Owner of Birding Under Nevada Skies, and is a 22-year resident of the Carson Valley. His desire to further the understanding and joys of observing birds and the wildlife in the out of doors is the driving force for this venture. An active guide for the Eagles and Agriculture Festival in Minden and the Spring Wings Festival in Fallon, Jim is also affiliated with the Great Basin Bird Observatory and Lahontan Audubon Society.
