Celebrate Earth Day by helping pollinators thrive at the
Walker River State Recreation Area on Saturday, April 20
YERINGTON, Nev. – Join park staff and volunteers from the University of Nevada, Reno’s College of Agriculture, Biotechnology and Natural Resources, and the US Fish and Wildlife Service for a fun-filled day of bringing a pollinator habitat to life. The all-day event will occur in two sessions, which will allow visitors to come and go as they please. In addition to the installation of the pollinator habitat, we will also be planting trees in the park’s newest campground.
Installing a Pollinator Garden
Help pollinators thrive at Walker River State Recreation Area as you learn the fundamentals of pollinators and their plant communities. Volunteers will demonstrate designing and creating the layout, and implementing water-wise pollinator habitats. Visitors are invited to dig-in to help establish the pollinator habitats.
WHEN: Saturday, April 20, 8 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
Installing a Monarch Butterfly Habitat
Plant hedgerows and wildflower seeds to increase Monarch Butterfly habitat and help this iconic butterfly flourish. Visitors will learn about the relationships between pollinators and plants and how they benefit the Earth.
WHEN: Saturday, April 20, 1 p.m. – 4 p.m.
Tree Planting at the RV Campground
The new RV campground is still in the finishing stages of construction and will open soon. Be a part of building one of Nevada’s newest state parks as we transform the new campground into a shady respite. Tree planting in the campground will occur throughout the day.
WHEN: Saturday, April 20, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.
WHERE: Meet at the Visitor Center at Walker River State Recreation Area, Pitchfork Ranch, 211 E. Walker Rd., Yerington, NV 89447. Directions from Yerington: drive south on highway 208 and turn left on East Walker Road and continue 4 miles to the entrance of the Pitchfork Ranch.
COST: The event itself is free however the $5 Day Use fee per vehicle still applies.
